Episode 40 | Human Rights in the Islamic Republic – with Siavash Safavi from Farashgard

Today, Aban 28th 1397/2577, we were supposed to have one episode about Farashgard movement, but it was so interesting, we ended up recording more than 2 hours, so here's the first half, dealing mostly with human rights violations in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

human rights in Iran - siavash safavi

Siavash (bottom row, circled) with the other trairors

You will hear about Siavash's life and political activity, including Farashgard, in episode 42, which is released 2 weeks after the current one (on December 3rd 2018).

The episode instead of scrolling all the way down:

Hebrew-listeners will find many of the major events described here in the timeline chapters – Timeline 1 and Timeline 2.

In the meantime, the post is full of links to Farashgard channels in the various social media, which you could easily spend two weeks

We talked about

Actually, we talked about so many things, I'm sure I've missed some. But we definitely talked about:

The letter to Trump by the "30 traitors"

The Larijani brothers

A short article with 4 authors, 2 additional reporters and 3 editors

Trita Parsi and NIAC (click to see what Siavash wrote about him)

human rights in Iran - trita parsi and NIAC

Saddam Hussein about Khomeini (Arabic with Persian subtitles, sorry…)

Promised links

to keep you busy for the next 2 weeks until the next episode airs.

Some Iranistic notes

Most episodes on Enriched Iranium are in Hebrew, and some also feature a current affairs\etymology section, which I would like to dedicate to Siavash Safavi's name today.

Let's start by noting that Siavash is an ancient Iranian name (Middle Persian siyāvaxš) and Safavi is an Arabic name, demonstrating the conflict of identities in the Iranian nation for the past almost 1400 years.

We read about him in the Shah Nameh, the Persian epos written by Ferdowsi in the 10th century, marking the revival of the Persian language as a written language after a few centuries of being only orally transmitted. Siyavash was a beautiful prince, of mixed race: His mother belonged to the royal house of the Turanians – Iran's archenemies from the east, and his father was the king of Iran.

Siyavash was so beautiful, his step mother, the queen, tried to seduce him a few times, and when she realized it ain't gonna happen, she framed him with all kinds of lies, and even though he was proven innocent by a fire-trial and the queen's evidence was proven fake by the king's astrologers – he went to exile anyway. Then he's welcomed and adopted by the Turanians, proves to be a very good statesman and all, but at the end is framed by evil people who were jealous of him, and when he was slaughtered, a tree grew from his blood. Very festive.

Some connect his myth to the dying god myth, making him the god of vegetation, and another (not contradicting or even competing) theory connects his image to Haji Firuz, the black-faced clown who appears in the streets before Nowruz, the New Year holiday, and disappears when the new year appears. It deserves a whole chapter sometime, too bad most of my episodes are in Hebrew.

Safavi is the name of the dynasty that ruled in the 16th-18th century and is especially important because it is Shah Esmail-s Safavi, a redheaded 14 year old boy, who converted Iran from Sunni to Shiite Islam. And then Siavash-e Safavi doesn't even know when Ramezan is. Can you believe what the Islamic Revolution did to Islam in Iran?

Anyway, thank you so much for listening.

Logistics and gratitude

If you enjoyed this episode – to share it with some good words and don't forget to come back in 2 weeks or skip now to episode 42, to hear the end. If you didn't enjoy it – share it with some bad words! Publicity is publicity.

If you enjoyed my podcast so much you want to express your gratitude by helping me – you are welcome to recommend the podcast to others, buy my book – so far I have only one in English – The Book of Esther Unmasked, about Achaemenid Iran using the Biblical Book of Esther as an excuse and a tour-guide. For Hebrew readers I have other books too, all about Pre-Islamic Iran, and our website offers some excellent vegan cookbooks as well.

You can also invite me for a lecture in Hebrew, English or Persian (با سیاوش به انگلیسی حرف می زدیم تا شنوندگان عبری زبان متوجه بشن، اما فارسی‌ام هم عالیه، از پست به یک سخنرانی به فارسی هم لینکی گذاشته ام), but talk to me before you offer your community or congregation – there might be some security issues involved. You can contact me at Iranium(at)zeresh.co.il.

You can also buy me coffee, which is expressing your gratitude without any reward but knowing you helped a creator, that would be www.ko-fi.com/thamar

If you happen to be in Israel on December 11th, we have a listener meeting to celebrate the podcast first year anniversary. It's in Jerusalem at 19:00. Here are links to the Facebook event and to Google Calendar so you can save it to your own calendar. There will be a lot of Cocoa Forest chocolate, and a talk with the listeners, hosted by Ido Kenan. In Hebrew.

English language listeners, I'm reminding you to come back for the second part of our talk, which will air on December 3rd 2018.

Kiosk's Song

Let's hear Yarom Bia, it's a dialectal folk song, which Arash Sobhani, Kiosk's leader and lead singer, translates as "come my love, come my love, come my love, come my love".

Coming Up on Enriched Iranium

Welcome to our favorite part of the show, for our most loyal listeners and to those who listen while driving and can't change stations – our next episodes!

And remember, a plan is nothing but basis for changes. That's how the IDF works.

It will be mostly in Hebrew because most episodes are in Hebrew, but don't forget to tune in to episode 42 on December 3rd 2018 for the rest of the talk with Siavash Safavi. We will have another English episode on January 21st, with the Pahlevani (Persian Yoga) artist Khashi Azad – stay tuned!

יש לנו שיחות עם שי סקונדה מתחום האיראן-תלמוד (גם נדחתה כמה פעמים);
עם רובי נמדר על השירה הפרסית, שאותה גילה בגיל 22;
שיחה עם מספרת הסיפורים עדנה קנטי על משפחתה המתועדת בספרה "אהבה וצרות אחרות";
עוד שיחה עם יסמין שלום מוטהדה על נשים איראניות חזקות;
שיחות עם אנשי תקשורת ישראלית בפרסית כמו שירלי שמסיאן ואולי אפילו מנשה אמיר;
קרוסאובר עם הפודקאסט "שרת התרבות", של עידו קינן, שנדחה כי יש לו 20 פרקים מוקלטים שהוא צריך עוד לערוך;

Episode 40 | Human Rights in the Islamic Republic – with Siavash Safavi from Farashgard

  1. Maayan

    • podcast_201qbq הגיב:

    • podcast_201qbq הגיב:
