Enriched Iranium | Episode 45 | Language Purism with Dr. Nahid Ghani

Today, the 3rd of Day 2577/1397, you get to listen to my friend and colleague Nahid Ghani and me talking about language purism in Persian. We ended up talking about Hebrew and English as well…

Language purism

For me it was 7:30-9 in the morning, for Nahid in Vancouver is was 21:30-23:00, so I was not awake yet and she was already tired, but I think we managed to do quite well 🙂

This is the episode, if you're listening through the website:

We edited two minutes of it (more or less from the beginning until the word "butt"), and sent it as a sample for PRX and Google's Podcast Creator Program, aimed to expand the voices in the industry (marginalized creators/audiences/topics), but apparently there were 6 offers more suitable than an Iranian and an Israeli talking about Persian heritage…

So what did we talk about?

Language purism

The Arabic component

Language identity

Phonological and morphological fusion, and semantic shifts (later I delved more into it and it seems that the borrowed words changed their meaning in Arabic after being borrowed to Persian, but that needs more research).

An interesting analogy between morphological fusion and intermarriage

This is my famous list of Arabic words with different meanings in Persian. Thank you, my Persian students at Shalem College of Liberal Arts in Jerusalem!

Some technicalities:

This was a pilot we made in English so the potential sponsors can understand, but the original purpose was to create a podcast addressing speakers of Persian around the globe, and talking explicitly about Iranian heritage – language, culture, history and identity. The implicit message was that an Iranian and an Israeli can be BFFs, collaborate, talk about things that are not politics – part of my life mission of building bridges and opening eyes.

So at PRX/Google they found six other offers more suitable, but if you can think of an espānser (that's Sponsor with a Persian accent) that would be interested in investing in us – please send them this episode and have them contact us at IRANIUM at zeresh.co.il.

We need sponsoring first of all because there's no way I'm editing another podcast – Enriched Iranium takes up enough of my precious time and for another podcast I will have to outsource at least the editing, and because it would be so much better if we record it in one studio at one time zone (intensive one-week trips, recording a few episodes each time).

If you enjoyed this episode – please share it with some good words!

If you didn't enjoy it – share it with some bad words! Publicity is publicity. We have a Facebook page and a Facebook group that helps me make decisions, but they're both in Hebrew. You're still welcome to like, rate and join, though…

If you want to follow only our English language episodes, you can follow this RSS feed: https://podcast.zeresh.co.il/tag/english/feed/ and hope I remember to add the tag "English" to all the English episodes.

If you enjoyed my podcast so much you want to express your gratitude by helping me – you are welcome to recommend the podcast to others, buy my book – so far I have only one in English – The Book of Esther Unmasked, about Achaemenid Iran using the Biblical Book of Esther as an excuse and a tour-guide. For Hebrew readers I have other books too, all about Pre-Islamic Iran, and our website offers some excellent vegan cookbooks as well.

You can also invite me for a lecture in Hebrew, English or Persian (با ناهید به انگلیسی حرف می زدیم تا شنوندگان عبری زبان متوجه بشن، اما فارسی‌ام هم نسبتا خوبه), but talk to me before you offer your community or congregation – there might be some security issues involved. You can contact me at Iranium(at)zeresh.co.il.

You can also buy me coffee, which is expressing your gratitude without any reward but knowing you helped a creator, that would be www.ko-fi.com/thamar

Kiosk's song

has got to be "love and death at the time of Facebook", because of all the English Component words:

You will have to excuse my Hebrew, most of our episodes are in Hebrew, and I'm not sure when the English episode will air. Right now it's planned for February 18th, but as you know – plans are only basis for changes (I learned taht in the IDF).

If you want to follow only our English language episodes, you can follow this RSS feed: https://podcast.zeresh.co.il/tag/english/feed/ and hope I remember to add the tag "English" to all the English episodes.

(I know I've already said that)

יש לנו שיחות עם פרויז ווסוק, הצייר של השאה;

עם ד"ר שי סקונדה מתחום האיראן-תלמוד;
עם רובי נמדר על השירה הפרסית, שאותה גילה בגיל 22;
שיחה עם מספרת הסיפורים עדנה קנטי על משפחתה המתועדת בספרה "אהבה וצרות אחרות";
עוד שיחה עם יסמין שלום מוטהדה על נשים איראניות חזקות;
שיחות עם אנשי תקשורת ישראלית בפרסית כמו שירלי שמסיאן ואולי אפילו מנשה אמיר;
קרוסאובר עם הפודקאסט "שרת התרבות", של עידו קינן, שנדחה כי יש לו 20 פרקים מוקלטים שהוא צריך עוד לערוך;
